Hello Beauteous Beings ~
I just finished a year long creative residency with a remarkable group of people. Yes, they all had interesting ideas and projects they were exploring, but what was most potent was the experience (and the witnessing) of learning to deeply listen to the rhythms of life/creativity that ebbs and flows and shifts on any given day. Learning to trust the movement and the momentum that is not linear or always clear but definitely has a direction. This was so much more than churning out an end product, or finalizing the thing we were going to put out into the world. It was about slowing down and allowing the river of creativity, which is inherently our life force, flow and letting our gentle yet steady attention invite a wider sense of how to both ride the river and be the river herself. This is in contrast to the incessant pushing and demand to make something and produce something at all costs that is so prevalent in our society.
This isn’t to say there is no value in having a vision, a trajectory and a goal. But how we tend that vision and move towards that goal can be more generous, I am learning. I joined the group with an agenda for completing some projects that I have being dreaming about for years. And although that is not what happened (yes, some new offerings are out…more on that below) what I learned has more longevity in how I approach my life and my creative dreams going forward. I am discovering a way to tend the river as an ongoing practice and this feeds the cultivation of my life as well as my projects. Some days tending to my heartache and exhaustion was the creative act in service to the longer flow of ‘the project’. Some days it was sitting down and not letting anything else distract me for an hour while I dove in to the nuts a bolts of things. And other days it was doing the creative act of writing or recording or editing. Each of these are in service to the other and to the larger river of life; each are ultimately a creative act.
One of the practices we did regularly was Gateless Writing…a practice of writing from a prompt/poem/word/phrase (which could also be totally ignored) for a period of time and then reading it to the group. The group reflects back the words, phrases, scenes, senses that got lit up for them hearing them. There is no ‘critique’ or editorial feedback, simply the reflection of what worked and what resonated for others. And in this way, our inherent and unique voice was encouraged and elevated. Our creative presence was honored. I encourage you to find the people and the communities that encourage and elevate your unique voice and support you in the wisdom of your rhythm and life.
And now for an exciting announcement: You can now find my guided meditations, some free for all and some for paid members, on Insight Timer. There is a meditation for grounding, for finding your seaweed spine (one of my favorites) and a multidimensional somatic awareness for presence, all free. And for paid members a potent mediation on working with pain. More to come in the coming months. To stay abreast of new additions, follow me on the app. And let me know if there is a meditation that you would really like to have me offer.
May we listen deeply to the ways our life force needs to ebb and flow
May we tend our creative life with generosity rather than demand
May we trust the nonlinear movement that has a pull and a direction
May we bring wild blessings and fierce love to all we encounter
Practice Prompts:
- If you have a project you are dreaming into, how do you relate with it? With resentment and demand and pushing through no matter what? With dismissal and ignoring? Can you truly treat it like a relationship and see where you need to tend it and give it some attention and breathing room and where you might be smothering it? Take some time to drop into your body and gravity and sense into what the project is ask of you right now…you might be surprised.
- Take some time to attune to the water and the liquid of your body, your fluid wisdom. You might do this with some soft music and the invitation to move your spine like seaweed and your arms and legs like tentacles and your hands and feet like sea anemone. Allow your body to find its ripples and waves and undulations, free of the demand for function and locomotion. Allow for small and micro movements not just big and ostentatious ones. See how this might open up some different awareness of your personal life force and river.

Inspirational Wisdom
spell for reclaiming the moment
even now
we could be happy
even now
breathing in
filling our bodies with right now
from the dirt below us
from our toes to our knees
hips up our spines
shoulders to earlobes
the tip top of our heads to beyond
to the stars
breathing wide
across our wingspan
into that sacred and constant silk web
where we belong
breathing deep
inhale back to great grandmother’s bosom
exhale seven generations of blessings
that will come through our
next choices
even now
we can be present
even now
life is right here, still
an erotic pulse kissing your jaw line
a restlessness of mind: too much, too little
there’s still someone you are longing to see
someone who startles you with simple pleasure
just because they exist
even now
we can anticipate harvest
be shocked by the thunderclap, the storm
laugh at the abundance of our grief
and our earnest attempt to avoid the inevitable
we are a delight
we could be another’s blessing
with our brief and epic lives
where every day
we are given the option
of love
